Whole-house repiping in Los Angeles

Many older LA homes still have galvanized steel water pipes that rust from the inside out. Repiping replaces them with new copper or PEX, and fixes low pressure and rusty water for good.

What needs fixing?

When patching stops making sense

Galvanized steel pipe was common in LA homes built before the 1960s. Over the decades, rust builds up inside until the pipes narrow, pressure drops, and weak spots start to leak.

Fixing one leak at a time gets expensive when the whole system is aging. Replacing all the water lines at once ends the cycle, restores pressure and clear water, and can help when you sell.

Copper or PEX?

Both are good choices. We’ll recommend one based on your home.

What to expect

  • A walkthrough of your home and a written price before anything starts.
  • Floors and furniture covered, and small openings in walls and ceilings to run the new lines.
  • New lines to every fixture, with new shutoff valves.
  • Water back on at the end of each work day in most homes.
  • A pressure test and city inspection before the openings are closed.

What affects the price

You get a written price before any work starts. These are the things that move it.

Size of the homeMore bathrooms and fixtures mean more pipe.
Copper or PEXCopper costs more in materials and labor.
AccessAttics and crawl spaces make it easier. Slab homes often route through walls and attics.
Wall patchingPatching and painting can be part of the job or handled separately.

Repiping questions

How do I know if I have galvanized pipes?

Find a pipe near your water heater or main shutoff. Galvanized pipe is dull gray with threaded fittings, and a magnet sticks to it. Copper is orange-brown, and a magnet won’t stick. Our galvanized pipe guide has more.

How long does a repipe take?

Most single-family homes take a few days, plus time for the city inspection and wall patching.

Can I stay home during a repipe?

Usually, yes. The water is off while we work and back on most evenings.

Copper or PEX?

Copper has a long track record and handles heat well. PEX costs less and installs faster with fewer joints. Both meet code, and we’ll recommend one for your home and budget.

Does repiping need a permit?

Yes, in Los Angeles and most nearby cities. The new pipes are inspected before the walls are closed.
