What needs fixing?

Your side of the meter

The water company owns the meter and the pipe on the street side of it. The line from the meter to your house is yours, and in older homes it’s often galvanized steel that has been rusting inside for decades.

A leak in this line can be hard to spot because the water soaks into the ground. Common clues are a wet spot in the yard, a water bill that keeps climbing, or low pressure everywhere in the house.

How we fix it

  • Confirm the leak with a meter test and trace where the line runs.
  • Repair a single damaged section when the rest of the line is sound.
  • Replace old or failing lines with new pipe rated for underground use, sized for your home.
  • Install or replace the main shutoff valve so you can turn the water off easily.

Main water line repair questions

Who is responsible for the water line, me or the city?

Usually the water company is responsible up to and including the meter. The line from the meter to your house is the homeowner’s responsibility.

Will a new water line give me better pressure?

If your old line is narrowed by rust, replacing it often makes a big difference. If the pressure is low coming from the street, a new line won’t change that, and we’ll tell you before you spend money on it.

How long does a main line replacement take?

Most are done in a day or two, depending on the length, the depth and what’s on top of the line.
